Simplifying Meditation For Beginners

Meditation is healing and will help you in your life. I wanted to offer some insight about meditation for beginners and what worked for me when I was starting out.

I think some of us think meditation is complicated or difficult and for those reasons, never embrace meditation as a spiritual practice.   I totally understand your concerns as I felt that way too.  I suspect for some of you that time may be an issue as we have very busy lives.

The truth is that meditation will come to you intuitively and that you can meditate anywhere anytime for as long as you would like to.

When I started a meditation practice, I had no real knowledge of meditation either. One of my mentors suggested I try meditation and showed me how to meditate in the following fashion.

He told me to sit in a chair with my back straight and my feet on the floor in a relaxed position and to close my eyes and place my hands in my lap in an upward position, to try to quieten my thoughts and to do this for 15 to 20 minutes daily.

When I first started, my mind would wander a lot and thoughts would come into my mind while I meditated, but I continued doing it every day. After a couple of weeks, I found that the rambling thoughts seemed to get better. And after spending much time in meditation, the rambling of my thoughts lessened. There was an inner peace that accompanied my meditations, so much so that it became my favorite thing to do. It still is, even today.

I also had heard of mantras and so intuitively, I was guided to use the mantras of “spiritual healing” and “healing”. As I did this on a regular basis, I found I was guided to books, people and more that I found helpful to me in my journey of healing.

When we meditate on a regular basis, it will help quiet the thoughts that we have about other things in our life. It connects us with our subconscious mind, that part of us that is closest to Spirit or God, whatever your concept of God is, even if you do not believe in God, per se.  There are many different benefits to meditation that are beneficial and may be helpful to you.

If you have difficulty while meditating, you might like to try a candle meditation as it helps you to focus. In the beginning, when you focus on the flame, you will notice your thoughts floating in the background. When you notice them, just bring your awareness or focus back to the flame. Eventually, you will notice that your thoughts will subside or will be minimal. (Just be sure you extinguish the flame if you close your eyes and continue your meditation.)The candle meditation is a great meditation to start with if you have never meditated before.

Similarly to a candle meditation, choosing a mantra can be helpful too. When you choose a mantra, such as inner peace, or healing, and that is your focal point, you will again notice your thoughts coming and going. Allow the thoughts to float around in the background and just be sure to come back to your mantra.

I am hopeful that you will find this article helpful to you. Meditation is powerful and healing and I would like to encourage you to give it a try. If you are having difficulty with meditation or if you have tried it and would like to share your experience, reach out to me. I would love to hear from you.
